Secret of
Your Heart
Words and Music by Benjamin Ang.
Listen | Chord Charts
At that time Jesus declared, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children. (Matthew 11:25)
I grew up with a Christian upbringing. And I wrote this song in a time when I started to realise that much of my knowledge of God was second-hand. At 20 years old, it was getting difficult for me to reconcile what I had learned about God, and what the world was saying about Him. But I knew that in the midst of this struggle, God was inviting me to abandon second-hand opinions, and come to know Him for myself. This song is a prayer to devote the rest of my life to beholding the Lord.

Lyrics
VERSE 1
Oh where could I start?
I’m in wonder of Your heart
Where Your love meets me here
There’s nothing to fear
I hear You calling me near
VERSE 2
Where could I begin?
I have tasted and I’ve seen
You hide Yourself from the wise
But welcome the child
Lord, here I wait by Your side
PRE-CHORUS 1
And oh, You’re captivating my soul
Each mystery You leave
Leaves me aching for more
CHORUS
Just to know
Just to lean in close
Every word
Every trace of Your heart
I’d spend forever to chase every part
Of Your mystery
Of Your history
I’d give all I have
Every breath that departs
If You’d let me in on the secret of Your heart
VERSE 3
I cast my crowns aside
My soul has set its sights
On the One I desire
Lord purify my heart
‘til it shines with the fire in Your eyes
PRE-CHORUS 2
Because oh, Lord only You satisfy
I want to chase You
For all of my life
"I'd spend forever to chase every part / Of your mystery"
I love that God is a mystery. Like the open ocean — you can dive into it from anywhere, but there's no guarantee you'll reach the bottom. Yet those who love the ocean will tell you that it has little to do with reaching its bottom. To know God is not to be acquainted with every inch of His infinity, but to be humbled by it, overwhelmed by it. And to marvel at the paradoxes one might find in between. May this song inspire you to dive in deeper, and truly behold God for who He is.
