The Better Thing
Words and Music by Benjamin Ang and Josh Yeoh.

But few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:42)
This song began as a simple chorus that I wrote, because two songs in a worship set needed something to transition between their ideas. But the words came from a truly vulnerable place in my heart. That year was 2020, and the world around me was not merely messy — it was wounded. Many friends of mine wanted answers from God in that trying time. But God offers more than that. His promise is not that we will lead perfect lives, but that in the groaning pain of imperfection He will be a hand to hold, a shelter to come under, and the soup that truly satisfies the soul. In the worst of times, He will be The Better Thing.

Lyrics
VERSE 1
You are not ashamed of my weakness
You remember that I am but dust
Still You call me right from the middle of the storm
VERSE 2
You're not one to ask for perfection
Striving ceases where Your mercy starts
When You pull me right to the middle of Your heart
CHORUS
When it gets messy
In You there’s perspective
I hope I can stay here ‘cause
You are the better thing
Though I’m imperfect
Your grace is my covering
Just let me stay here ‘cause
You are the better thing
VERSE 3
Where my heart is, You are my treasure
Where the longing of our hearts will meet
Where You are is right in the middle of my love
BRIDGE
Grace still my covering
No matter where I've been
I'm overtaken
Drawn deeper, drawn in
Between folds of patience
I am accepted
In plenty, in suffering
With each day that's passing
Your heart, still my longing
So louder may I sing
An anthem resounding
You are the better thing
"Drawn deeper, drawn in / between folds of patience / I am accepted"
It confounds me sometimes just how patient of a man Jesus was. The disciple John, a man so full of rage as to suggest Jesus call fire on a town, became the same man who entitled himself 'the disciple Jesus loved' in his gospel, having been so changed by His kindness. And even Judas, the traitor, received bread from Jesus' own hand at the last supper. But what about me? In my ever-growing debt of offence against the God of all the universe, I have only encountered an equally ever-increasing response of patience, patience, and more heart-breaking patience. May the depth of His compassion cause your heart to become tender, as it has mine.
